Cray maintain hold over Robins
Carshalton Athletic’s string of recent poor results against Cray Wanderers continued as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Colston Avenue on Saturday.
The Robins entered the game on a run of six unbeaten, but having not triumphed over their opponents in five games over a nearly five year period. And despite Cray’s current relatively low league position, they never really looked likely to break the streak.
Free kicks aside, a subdued first half saw very little goal threat from either side but Cray took the lead when Joe Bell’s missed clearance allowed Ellis Brown to go through unchallenged and fire past Aaron Jones, deputising for the injured Will Huffer.
The hole became deeper for the Robins in the second half when Gary Lockyer flicked on Sean Rowley’s clearance and Brown claimed his second with a scorching drive into the top corner.
This second goal seemed finally to bring the Robins to life and from their first shot on target on the hour Rowley had to make a good save with his feet to deny Danny Bassett. But despite enjoying plenty of possession for the rest of the game Carshalton could do little to dent a disciplined Cray rearguard.
Bell’s header from Brad Williams’ corner, his first goal for the club, in the dying minutes was a consolation only as Cray completed a season double over the Robins.
