CAFC Women vs Dorking Wanderers Development – Match Report
A debut brace from Maria Andrade secured the Robins an emphatic 7-0 victory over Dorking Wanderers Development at Oakwood Sports Centre on Sunday to top the Surrey Premier Division.
Manager Aaron Lamont gave debuts to the Andrade twins, while latest addition, Riley, was named among the substitutes.
It was a lively start to proceedings from the Robins; the intense high press scared the hosts into submission. With the majority of the action in Dorking’s own half, Georgie Edwards’s dipping delivery into the penalty area was split and almost capitalised on by an alert Sarah Chapman. Moments later, Josie Alderman drifted inside off the left flank to manufacture the shooting opportunity, side-footing goal-bound and bringing about the diving save. Eventually, the ladies received their just deserts inside eight minutes when Kanita Throp delivered the corner, and pinball ensued for Maria Andrade to bundle the ball over the line.
Immediately from kick-off, Lamont’s side then came narrowly close to netting a second, Alderman lashing an effort inches wide of the bottom right corner. The sustained attacking pressure carried on, and Heather Eade extended our advantage a few minutes later when she cut inside and managed to find the far corner.
Wave after wave of attack followed, and the Dorking backline soon subsided once again thanks to Maria completing her brace. The Wombles loanee did well to take down a right-flank cross, keeping her composure enough to round the goalkeeper and stab home.
There was a brief pause to proceedings for Eade to receive some treatment following a crunching tackle; that said, the forward was able to remain on the pitch and nearly sealed a brace midway through after a swivelled strike the wrong side of the post. The final third of the half was ushered in by a goal from Evie Nebbitt. The outswinging corner produced a tame header that Nebbitt had to divert into the back of the net from the six-yard box with her back to the goal.
Carshalton continued to move the ball well, and before long, the ladies were five goals better. Lamont’s quintessential high press forced the turnover in the host’s penalty area, ensuring the ball fell kindly for Kenza Gueriani to control and flash beyond the goalkeeper.
On the stroke of halftime, the ball was fizzed across to Alderman down the left channel, who drove it low and hard to force the save from the home side’s shot-stopper before miscuing the follow-up. Heading into the break, the Wanderers were yet to test Solly between the sticks, a dominant opening 45. Lamont introduced latest addition, Riley, to proceedings at the break with Gueriani making way. The Robins carried forward their attacking intent from the first 45 into the second, and unsurprisingly, the first chance of the half fell the way of the Reds. Throp’s short corner was cleared only as far as Chapman, whose strike on the edge of the penalty area rattled the bar. Despite that, Carshalton proceeded to net twice in quick succession just after the 50th minute. The Aldrade twins combined well down the right channel for a touchline delivery to be powered into the net following a diving Eade header, securing her brace too. Moments later, Throp’s corner that was planted on top of the Wanderers shot-stopper was turned in off the head of Nebbitt, sealing Carshalton’s third brace of the afternoon.
The Reds were enjoying the lion’s share of possession, applying considerable pressure on the home side in pursuit of an eighth. Lamont’s high defensive line continued to repel every attempt Dorking made to break at pace up the other end, but desperate to add to their growing tally, the manager criticised his team for overcomplicating play in the final third. Just after the hour mark, Chapman attacked left and unleashed another venomous strike that rattled the bar before Eade’s low-driven follow-up was straight down the throat of the goalkeeper, forcing the diving stop to successfully gather. Approaching the 70th minute, the Wanderers were causing a few problems down the left flank through a tricky winger; however, the hosts were still yet to create any chances of note or call Solly into action.
Towards the latter stages, Carshalton carried on pushing to extend their sizeable advantage. Riley and Dulley’s cheeky give-and-go enabled the former to carry the ball into the penalty area and drive a shot into the defender before sending the follow-up sailing over the bar from a few yards out. A few minutes later, Eade’s 25-yard speculative strike was well hit and came agonisingly close to angling into the top right corner. With nine minutes until full time, substitute Dulley let fly a low-driven effort that looked as though it was heading towards nestling in the far corner, but it was diverted past the opposite post after ricocheting off the boot of Andrade. In the dying embers of the match, the Reds squandered a number of golden opportunities to add to their tally: Riley’s arrowed cross across the face of goal, and Eade’s hooked shot at the front post.
The win sees the ladies overtake Farnham and top the Surrey Premier Division on 22 points; that said, Town boast three games in hand over Lamont’s side. The Robins now have back-to-back games against the high-flying outfit starting next weekend in the League Cup. There will be hopes that the ladies can carry forward the momentum garnered into both matches vs. Farnham.
