Robins sink Margate to reclaim playoff berth
Carshalton Athletic leaped two places into the final Isthmian League Premier Division playoff place after a 3-0 win over struggling Margate on Saturday.
A first half strike from Kwaku Frimpong and more goal contributions from defenders Charlie Kennett and Luke Read in the second kept the pressure on teams in and around the playoff hunt, including those with games in hand over the Robins.
Carshalton took a grip of the game like a team coming off back-to-back wins against top three sides and with one defeat in 13 games, compared with opponents who had lost nine of their last 10. Mason Saunders-Henry was the first to test Harry Seaden in the Margate goal after a fine solo run. The Robins had to wait until four minutes before half time though for the breakthrough, Frimpong this time with a fine bit of individual play and expert finish for his second goal in consecutive home games.
Margate thought they had levelled before the break but top scorer Steve Cawley’s effort was ruled out for offside.
And the Robins rubbed salt in the fresh wounds early in the second half when they extended their advantage, full back Charlie Kennett finishing from a tight angle for his first goal for the club following a lengthy absence through injury earlier in the season. With their tails up, Bunmi Babajide was unlucky to see his shot come back off the bar. However, a third goal followed not long after, Read continuing his rich vein of recent scoring form with a near post finish for his seventh goal of the season.
